In an age of mainstream LGBTQ+ cinema that is either palatably upmarket (All of Us Strangers) or for the kids (Love Simon), is there still room for actually queer cinema that is actually subversive? How can we frighten off the straights again?
Marry me! You are right that the straights need frightening away, and I hope to get to that in a little while, but before that I fear you may have — at least partially — answered your own question, when you included the word ‘mainstream’. I think (and I suspect that if you are somebody who is interested in scaring hets you also think this) that there can be precious little queerness within the busy waters of the mainstream, but that it must exist on the contrary in the side stream, attracting the attention of various folk who have come to gaze at the rainbow trout who idle there, shining brightly in warm dappled shallows by the riverbank.
